The Dutch Culture: 5 Wild and Exciting Things to Do in Amsterdam

In 2018, tourism in the Netherlands increased by 9%, which was the biggest jump the country’s seen in 12 years. A big reason why people visit Amsterdam is they think it’s the land of drugs and prostitutes.

While it’s true you can find both things here, there’s so much more this city has to offer. If you’re planning on visiting the Netherlands, then here are 5 things to do in Amsterdam.

1. Take a Bike Tour

What better way to explore the city than to do something the locals do? Amsterdam has a great biking infrastructure, which means you can enjoy the fresh air while riding around on an omafiets (a Dutch-style bike).

There are many companies that offer group bike tours, but if you’re a fan of DIYing, you can also rent your own bike and sightsee on your own.

2. Go to the Artis Zoo

For the animal lovers, you’ll want to take a walk on the wild side at the Artis Zoo. It’s the oldest zoo in the entire country, as well as one of the oldest in all of Europe.

Inside, you can find more than just a zoo. Artis also has an aquarium, planetarium, arboretum, and an extensive art collection.

3. Go on a High Rise Swing

At the Amsterdam Central train station, when you walk out and look across the IJ River, you’ll see a high rise with “XXX” on it; this is the A’DAM tower located in Amsterdam North.

Take an elevator to the very top where A’DAM Lookout is. Here, you can hop on a swing on the edge of the building that puts you 100 meters above the ground!

4. Go Clubbing

Amsterdam is a mecca for music, so you won’t want to miss out on a chance to go clubbing while in this city. Clubs in Amsterdam are open almost all week long, so you’re almost guaranteed to have a good night no matter which days you’re there for.

If you’re used to clubs that close at 2 a.m., then you’re in for a shocker. Amsterdammers like to party until 5 a.m.; you better make sure you get plenty of sleep or chug energy drinks so you can keep up!

5. Walk Through Albert Cuypmarkt

Albert Cuypmarkt is the market you need to go to if you’re in Amsterdam. Not only can you find items for your home, fresh vegetables, and beautiful flowers, but you can enjoy some Dutch cuisine from various stands.

Take this chance to try some raw herring or some fresh-made hot stroopwafels. After your stroll, you can duck into one of the many cafes, restaurants, or bars nearby.

Go Wild with Things to Do in Amsterdam

With so many things to do in Amsterdam, you’ll definitely have a great time. Because it’s such a safe city, you won’t have to worry about much, except for pickpockets. So remember to keep your wits about you and don’t go too crazy!
