1. Ozark

With a setup similar to Breaking Bad, Ozark is a crime drama that tells the story of a family who gets drawn into a life of money laundering. Yet instead of taking place in the Southwest, it takes place in, you guessed it: the Ozarks.

Family drama, drug cartels, and southern accents, Ozark has a little something for everyone. It also has a phenomenal cast, featuring Jason Bateman, Laura Linney, and Julia Garner.

Ozark season 3 was just released earlier this year. All three seasons are available for streaming on Netflix.

2. Killing Eve

Are you looking for a quirky spy show complete with espionage and intrigue? If so, Killing Eve might be your next favorite show.

Sandra Oh stars as Eve, an MI5 officer who craves excitement and a change of pace. And a change of pace is what she gets when she begins chasing international assassin Villanelle, played by Jodie Comer.

What starts as a game of cat and mouse quickly changes into something deeper. Killing Eve is full of twists and turns that’ll keep you on the edge of your seat.

3. Schitt’s Creek

The trope of rags to riches is nothing new, but it’s hard to find it done more successfully than in the Canadian comedy, Schitt’s Creek.

Schitt’s Creek tells the story of an extraordinarily wealthy family that loses it all and is forced to survive in a town that lends the show its name. The characters, though vapid and superficial at times, are deep and well-fleshed out. When you’re not laughing, you may even stumble across one or two tear-jerking moments.

The final season of Schitt’s Creek just released this year. Watch it all on Netflix.

4. Game of Thrones

The ultimate in epic fantasy, Game of Thrones features an enormous cast and follows several story arcs. Set on the continents of fictional Westeros and Essos, Game of Thrones tells the story of several families vying for control of the Iron Throne.

While several families fight for control, another storyline takes place in the North. There, a brotherhood defends the realm against fierce people and legendary creatures. A third arc is set on the other side of the world, where a deposed dynasty plots its return to Westeros.

Although it features magic, ice zombies, and dragons, the world of Game of Thrones feels real, and you’re certain to quickly develop favorite characters who you’ll root for.

The last season may be divisive, but you can still watch it all on HBO.

5. Avatar the Last Airbender

Are you an anime fan? Even if you’re not, Avatar the Last Airbender may be a gem that you didn’t know existed.

Released over a decade ago on Nickelodeon, the show has maintained a dedicated set of loyal fans. Avatar the Last Airbender is set in an Asiatic-like world, where certain people can manipulate one of four elements: water, earth, fire, or air. The Avatar is capable of bending all four elements and is tasked with bringing peace to the world.

With inspiration drawn from Chinese martial arts, Avatar the Last Airbender is beautiful, funny, and surprisingly deep.
