We can probably all agree that one of the most frustrating aspects of our daily tasks regarding computers and the internet is forgetting our passwords! No matter how much you try, you just cannot remember every single password.
If you’re an Apple user, however, there’s a great solution.
You can set up and use the iCloud Keychain on your Apple device. This saves your passwords for you and auto-fills your login credentials automatically.
Here’s how to set up and use iCloud Keychain:
1. Update Your Passwords
Chances are, you don’t have the strongest passwords. You want to ensure password safety — that is, you have passwords that cannot be easily remembered, discovered, or stolen.
Make sure all of your passwords are up to date and are difficult for the average person to figure out. Ideally, you should have a variety of different passwords for your various accounts.
Once this is done, you can now move to set up iCloud Keychain:
2. Turn On iCloud Keychain
First, go to your iPhone and go to Settings, choose your name and then select the iCloud option.
Select the Keychain option and toggle it on.
Second, go to your Mac and click on the Apple icon in the menu bar () and select System Preferences. Select the iCloud option. Then, when the new dialog box opens select Keychain. Toggle on the Keychain.
Once these two options are toggled, you will be alerted to save a password every time you create a new one or login into an account.
3. Finding Your Password
When you need to find your passwords stored in your iCloud Keychain, go to your Settings on your Mac or other Apple device.
Once your Settings have been opened, select the Password and Accounts option. Then select Website & App Passwords. You will have to use Touch ID, Face ID, or your passcode to access the information.
Once you have accessed the information, you will see a list of all of your websites that have saved login credentials.
You can also use this time to add new login credentials, edit passwords, and remove passwords.
4. What Else Does iCloud Keychain Do?
Apart from storing usernames and passwords, there are other benefits to the iCloud Keychain. You can also use it to store credit card information without the authorization code.
You can also use it to store your Wi-Fi passwords. The iCloud Keychain, along with other information stored in the iCloud, is encrypted with a security key that is unique to a particular Apple device.
If you enter the wrong passcode or your Face ID or Touch ID cannot be recognized when trying to access your iCloud Keychain, you will lose access to it. You will have to contact Apple Support. They will verify your identity and help you access the iCloud Keychain.
Whenever you turn off the iCloud Keychain option, you are given the option of keeping your passwords and other credentials saved or deleting them in one go.
