Getting to Know the Warning Signs of Erectile Dysfunction

Medical form on a table, diagnosis erectile dysfunction

As you age, it is likely that your libido will start to decrease. However, this does not mean that younger men are completely spared from experiencing impotence or erectile dysfunction.

There are several factors that could put you at risk for impotence, but the good news is, spotting these warning signs of erectile dysfunction can help you be better prepared for what’s to come.

Let’s take a look at a few signs that could indicate a potential case of impotence.

1. Mental Illness

Anxiety, depression, OCD and other mental illnesses can often have an impact on your desire to maintain an erection. When you’re constantly worrying or stressing about things, it can also take a toll on your desire to have sex

Additionally, if you are on medication for depression or another mental illness, you are also likely to experience these side effects.

One way to prevent this from resulting in erectile dysfunction is to properly address your mental health issues. Talk to your significant other about what you’re experiencing, try and incorporate some exercise into your routine and consider therapy for your condition.

2. Sleep Disorders

There are several sleep disorders that can negatively affect your body’s production of testosterone. This, in turn, could lead to erectile dysfunction in the long run.

In fact, the relationship between Sleep Apnea and Erectile Dysfunction has been well established for quite some time, and there is a definite correlation between the two. Insomnia, restless leg syndrome and shift work disorder are other conditions that can put you at risk for erectile dysfunction.

3. Hormonal Imbalance

Low muscle mass, unexplained weight gain, dry skin, and lowered libido are all indicators of a hormonal imbalance in the male body. Most men with low amounts of testosterone become susceptible to conditions like impotence or erectile dysfunction.

Testosterone patches, gels or other types of therapy can help you prevent this from happening.

4. Heart Conditions

Your ability to hold an erection depends on the body’s ability to pump the right amount of blood to your penis. When you have heart problems, this ability is compromised making you more susceptible to impotence.

5. Physical Injuries

Perhaps a more direct cause of ED is a physical injury to your groin. This can further be exacerbated after you have surgery in your groin area. Maintaining an erection might become more painful than pleasurable, temporarily impairing your ability to hold one.

In these conditions, it is better to avoid sexual intimacy until your body has healed completely to prevent permanent damage.

What to Do if You Notice Warning Signs of Erectile Dysfunction

If you’ve noticed any of the above warning signs of erectile dysfunction, it is important that you get the medical help you need. Erectile dysfunction usually indicates a deeper issue that needs to be addressed. Whether the issue is anxiety, a heart problem or a hormonal imbalance, do consult your general physician to get a proper evaluation of your situation.
