When most people think of Texas, images of cowboy hats and boots first pop up. But did you know that more than 6 million Texans are golfing enthusiasts?
Thanks to the mild, warm climate and plenty of wide-open space, you can find some of the best golfing around. There are hundreds of courses across the state for you to choose from.
But how do you know which Texas golf courses are the best? We have four that you need to add to your bucket list.
1. La Cantera Resort: The Palmer Course
We are going to start this list off with a course designed by the renowned Arnold Palmer. These 18 holes will give you a challenge as you navigate the elevation changes and mature oak trees.
You’ll enjoy the beauty of nature as you make your way by the numerous lakes, sand dunes, and waterfalls. Be sure to check out the fourth hole. It has golfers aiming for a par 3 as they perform a long carry over a lake that features several waterfalls along the front green.
2. The Rawls Course at Texas Tech
Lubbock may be difficult to get to and known for being flat, but don’t let that deter you from visiting the Rawls Course at Texas Tech. It’s ranked as one of the best college courses in the country.
Golfers will be pleasantly surprised by the rolling dunes that mimic natural formations. This course will challenge your basic skills of strategy formation and follow through.
Once you complete the 18 holes, be sure to check out the state of the art training facility for the Red Raider golf team. There are a few extra holes that were designed just for the team. They might inspire you to start using golf training aids.
3. Squaw Valley Golf Course: Apache Links
There are two golf courses at Squaw Valley Golf Course, Apache and Comanche. For a traditional course experience, Comanche is the course of choice. Apache is going to give you a mix of links and traditional style throughout its 18 holes.
You’ll love the broad, sweeping fairways of the first nine. Lush trees or berms line each one. You’ll also notice heavy contouring of the fairways.
4. Butterfield Trail Golf Club
One of the most notable features of this award-winning municipal golf course is the impressive scenic views. It’s truly an experience in nature with the contrast of lush fairways and desert surroundings. Then there are the Franklin Mountains in the distance providing the backdrop.
The course is more of a resort-style with large rolling contours and undulations. You will rarely see another party playing as very few of the fairways as side by side.
