Loving what you do means you’ll never work a day in your life… or at least that’s what they say. Truth is, most young people graduate high school with no idea of what their plans are.
Some students end up pursuing a higher education in the hopes that they’ll figure out their calling at college, while others decide to enter the workforce immediately.
Regardless of what you choose to do, learning how to find your dream job is a skill you’ll always need. Keep reading for 10 tips on how to do so!
1. Find a Job
Find a job, any job will do. Having a job while looking for a job will make you more appealing to hiring managers.
It is preferable that the job you find is something that is relative or in the same field as to gain experience. However, this is not completely necessary.
If you’re having a hard time finding a place of employment, consider attending a career fair.
2. Network With Your Peers
Social media is a great tool for finding a job that you love. Being able to connect with people in your desired field will allow you to be the first to hear about openings.
3. Interview With Confidence
An interview isn’t all about having the perfect answers. It is about conveying them with confidence and eloquence.
Some questions are meant to be tricky. Let your interviewer know what steps you will take to find the answer. Don’t let a curveball throw you off of your game.
4. Be Honest About Your Skill Sets
You may think you want to get a job in a certain profession but are lacking in the skills department. This can be a real problem because training costs money. If you don’t have experience, you may get through training and hate the job.
Likewise, if you have a great skill set, finding a job might be easier if you incorporate them.
5. Edit That Resume!
Don’t apply to 10 jobs with the same exact resume. Core information will stay the same. The skills required for certain jobs may need to be highlighted to match each industry.
6. Include a Cover Letter
Including a cover letter conveys professionalism. Even if the job does not require one, it will allow the hiring manager to get to know you a bit better.
7. Learn About the Company
If you’re lucky enough to snag an interview, take the time to learn about the company you might work for. Also, attempt to learn a bit about the interviewer.
8. Dress Appropriately, or Overdress
If you know someone at the company, ask what the staff wears on a daily basis. Not being able to find out doesn’t mean wear jeans and a t-shirt. Slacks or a modest skirt with a buttondown or nice blouse will present well.
9. Ask Questions
Ask questions, but don’t lead with the salary question. Find out about office culture, training, or what the daily responsibilities are.

Getting your dream job is exciting. Don’t jump to a “yes” response off the bat, though. Even if you’ve decided you’ll take the position, give yourself a day to think.
